Cheat Codes

Black Thought & Danger Mouse | BMG

Black Thought, lead MC of the Philadelphia-based hip hop group the Roots, joins record producer Danger Mouse for this impeccable collaboration. With complex and unparalleled wordplay, high-end guest appearances and prolific beats throughout, the album is a joy to behold. Despite delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the long-awaited Cheat Codes was well worth the wait and will be viewed by many as a masterpiece.

Could We Be More

Kokoroko | Brownswood Recordings

London-based eight-piece musical group Kokoroko shine on their debut record, Could We Be More. After garnering significant attention on YouTube, four years later, this finely crafted album combines a fascinating fusion of jazz and Afrobeat. Over wonderfully hypnotic rhythms, electric guitar solo’s and harmonised horns, the songs blend beautifully, and will no doubt find its way to dancefloors and festivals in no time at all.

Cry Sugar

Hudson Mohawke | Warp Records

After working with some of the biggest music artists on Kanye West's G.O.O.D. Music, Glaswegian DJ and producer Hudson Mohawke comes into his own. Mohawke is back to his roots, stating "music like happy hardcore is very direct and pure, an expression of joy.” On Cry Sugar, the tracks are filled with 80s electro, explosive bass and magnificently chaotic and dramatic mood swings. With so many genres on show, this diverse selection is a reminder of Birchard’s talents.

Pastlife

Day Wave | PIAS

Oakland indie rockers Day Wave follow up on The Days We Had with their second studio album. At under 30 minutes, Pastlife is perfect for those looking to sit back and relax. The bands writing suits their simplistic sound and although it’s a similar style they used on the albums predecessor, their newest record is far more memorable, full of hope and energy.

No Rules Sandy

Sylvan Esso | Loma VIsta Recordings

American electronic pop duo Sylvan Esso experiment with positive results on their fourth studio album, No Rules Sandy. With their same, slightly odd sound, full of romance and joy, their latest album covers a broad range of emotions. With far more vocal, and a little less instrumental than we’re used to, their latest record has a much smoother flow and is quite possibly Sylvan Esso’s best album to date.
