Songs of a Lost World

The Cure | Polydor Records

Several years in the making, Songs of a Lost World is the fourteenth studio album by English rock band the Cure. The band's first release of new material in 16 years, since the release of 4:13 Dream in 2008, is both cohesive and full of beautifully crafted melodies. Once at the forefront of the emerging post-punk and new wave movements of the 80s, Smith’s ageless voice alongside the bands dynamic chemistry immediately transport you back there. This certainly isn’t a farewell, with two more albums on the way, its clear they still have so much more to give.

Small Changes

Michael Kiwanuka | Polydor Records

It’s a welcome return for one of Britain’s most talented songwriters, as Michael Kiwanuka introduces Small Changes, his fourth studio album. For his latest record Kiwanuka says Gene Clark, Sade and Beth Gibbons were his influences. Talking about the sound on his latest album, Kiwanuka’s said “It sounded the way I felt about change - part hopeful, part excited, but also with the melancholy of realising that, sometimes change is hard and it's overwhelming and you've got no control over it." Genuine and inventive, with lyrics full of hope, Kiwanuka’s is at his creative peak, with stunning ballads, orchestral soul and dreamy grooves.

Nobody Loves You More

Kim Deal | 4AD

Nobody Loves You More is the debut solo album by American musician Kim Deal. Refined over several years, the 11-track album includes songs dating back to 2011. Deal was inspired by her parents, country musician George Jones, performance artist Bas Jan Ader, and the late Pixies audio engineer Steve Albini, of whom she said “He was just so knowledgable. A consummate professional.” Sonically versatile, the ex-Pixies vocalist balances nostalgia with innovation, and with a variety of collaborators from Breeders past and present, Deal’s raw vulnerability reflects remarkably throughout.

Negative Spaces

Poppy | Sumerian Records

Negative Spaces is the sixth studio album by American singer Poppy. With raw, poetic lyrics and elements of grunge and tech-metal, Poppy is an ever-evolving artist. The Californian YouTube star has cited that Cyndi Lauper, and Elvis Presley are musical inspirations, with a strong K-pop influence to her sound. Adopting a different style to her previous album Zig, Poppy manages to cleverly mix and unite multiple genres for some of the year’s best anthems. Mature, thought provoking and reassured, Poppy is chaotic and adventurous on Negative Spaces. Quite possibly her best work yet.

Night Palace

Mount Eerie | P.W. Elverum & Sun

Mount Eerie return to form on Night Palace, the bands eleventh studio album. Mount Eerie is the musical project of Washington-based songwriter Phil Elverum. The title of the album is a reference to Joanne Kyger's poem of the same name and the album is their longest in length, at just over 80 mins long. Heavily inspired by Zen meditation, Elverum said on the album’s meaning “I think it's about connection. It's not about solitude or smallness or insignificance or impermanence, although those themes are always there”. A truly phenomenal auditory experience, Elverum’s latest record is a masterpiece.
