A fire hood (sometimes called an acoustic fire hood) is a fire-rated enclosure fitted around the back of an in-ceiling or in-wall speaker before it's installed. Once the speaker is in place, the hood is completely hidden, but it's doing an essential job behind the scenes.
When a speaker is recessed into a ceiling or wall, an opening has to be cut into that surface. If that ceiling or wall was built to resist fire for a certain period of time, as most are, that cut-out becomes a weak point. A fire hood reinstates the fire resistance that installation would otherwise compromise, helping to stop fire and smoke spreading through the gap.
Ceilings and walls in domestic properties are usually designed to hold back fire for a set period, giving people time to escape and reducing how quickly a fire can spread through a building. A standard two-storey house ceiling is typically built to resist fire for around 30 minutes. In flats and maisonettes, where floors and walls often separate one dwelling from another, that figure can rise to 60 minutes or more.
An in-ceiling speaker is not fire-rated on its own. Cutting a 150–200mm hole into a plasterboard ceiling to fit one removes a section of that fire barrier, and without protection, that opening stays exactly as vulnerable as it looks.
Under UK and EU Building Regulations, any opening made in a fire-resisting ceiling or wall must not reduce its ability to contain fire for its designed rating. In practice, that means installations below a habitable room, a bedroom, a living room, an office, or similar will typically need a fire hood to stay compliant. The same applies in flats and multi-occupancy buildings, where fire compartmentation between dwellings is critical, and it applies whether the installation is a new build or a retrofit into an existing home.
It's also worth knowing that home insurers are increasingly scrutinising this detail. Claims relating to fire damage have been rejected where a ceiling's fire integrity was compromised by an unprotected speaker cut-out, leaving the installer, rather than the manufacturer or homeowner, exposed to that liability.
Fire protection is the main reason fire hoods exist, but it's not the only benefit:
Fire protection — Restores the fire resistance of the ceiling or wall once a speaker aperture has been cut, helping to slow the spread of fire and smoke between floors or rooms.
Reduced sound transfer — The acoustic layer within a fire hood helps absorb sound from the back of the speaker, cutting down on noise travelling into the room above or behind.
Improved audio performance — Most in-ceiling and in-wall speakers are open-backed, relying on the void behind them to act as a cabinet. A fire hood creates a semi-sealed air volume around the speaker, similar to a proper enclosure, which can noticeably improve bass response and dynamics compared to an unprotected void.
Not every installation requires a fire hood. Where a speaker is surface-mounted on a wall rather than recessed into it, using a Creator Series Mount Box, for example, no opening is cut into the wall's structure, so no fire hood is needed. Fire hoods are specifically for recessed, in-ceiling and in-wall installations, where an aperture has been made in a surface that forms part of the building's fire strategy.
Fire hoods aren't the most exciting part of a speaker installation, but they're one of the most important, protecting the people in the building and protecting installers from liability further down the line. Choosing a hood that's designed to fit properly with the speaker being installed makes it a straightforward addition to any project.
