I’m Haruka, and I am an Acoustic Engineer at Monitor Audio Group. My role involves working with people both inside and outside the team to bring a truthful, natural sound to life. Some of the recent products I’ve worked on are Climate 3G and Bronze 7G.
There are quite a few, but the most notable one has to be Silent Flow Port Technology. Inspired by the aerodynamic structure of an owl’s wing, this unique shape was perfected after countless prototypes. By managing the airflow entering and leaving the port to minimise turbulence, we’ve successfully cut down unwanted noise, which delivers a noticeably cleaner and deeper low-end reproduction.
Additionally, though it is not a physical component built into the speaker itself, our measurement process is also evolving. Alongside numerous other metrics, we’ve been measuring directivity. Rather than tuning the speaker just to achieve impressive 'on-paper' specs measured on-axis in an anechoic chamber, we’ve tuned this model to ensure the actual listening experience in a real living space is fully maximised.
Yes, during the early stages of development, we found that the tweeter was the main factor limiting the overall performance. Therefore, we completely redesigned the structure, with significant modifications to the magnetic circuit, including the addition of a shorting ring copper cap and optimisation of the compression ring. This is how the new C-CAM Gold Dome Tweeter was born. It enables us to achieve a wonderfully smooth, refined high-frequency response with high sensitivity at low distortion. As a result, the floorstanding models now deliver higher peak sound pressure levels, whilst the bookshelf models produce a more airy, articulate high-frequency response.
The geometry of Rigid Surface Technology III cone is designed to maximise the stiffness of the cone while suppressing unwanted resonance. A metal cone could be a double-edged sword; it could be light and rigid, but the breakup could be uncontrollable. We have resolved this issue and achieved cleaner, more controlled sound with this technology.
In this model, the 3-way system reduces the frequency range covered by the woofer compared to a 2-way system, with the midrange taking over that portion. There are several advantages, but to highlight the two main ones:
Firstly, distortion in the midrange has been significantly reduced, as the woofer no longer has to produce both low and mid frequencies simultaneously. And secondly, as the midrange driver prevents beaming in the midrange, the directivity is now more consistent across the entire frequency range from bass to treble, allowing a well-balanced sound to be distributed throughout the room.
Our ultimate goal is to reproduce music as the artist intended, creating a concert hall in front of you so that you aren’t even conscious of the existence of the loudspeakers. Our Silver Series 8G gets one step closer to it by adding high-frequency details, reducing port noise and optimising the whole soundstage.
