Spotlight: Engineering Radius Series 4G

15th June 2026

We sit down with Technical Director Michael Hedges to discuss his input in the creation of the new Radius Series 4G and what makes this newest range so unique.

Briefly introduce yourself and your role at Monitor Audio.

My name is Michael Hedges, and I am the Technical Director at Monitor Audio Group. I am responsible for the Research & Development of all our new products, bringing new ideas and technologies to life.

What are the key technical improvements in the latest Radius Series compared to its predecessor?

As an engineering team, we’ve advanced our capabilities and simulation tools significantly since we launched Radius 3G back in 2013. After more than a decade, a lot has changed, and that’s exactly why we wanted to revisit what Radius could be.

Originally, the range was targeted at the sub-sat market, but that space has evolved considerably. With the new generation, we’ve reimagined Radius for a new type of user and a much broader set of applications.

Aesthetically, Radius has always stood apart as a beautifully designed range. Now, by combining that signature look with our latest 25mm C-CAM gold dome tweeter from the 8th Generation Silver Series, along with our RST III cone technology, we’ve elevated the audio performance well beyond what the previous generation could achieve.

Did you encounter any engineering challenges with the latest range, and how did you work through them?

There were plenty of challenges along the way. Designing a compact speaker like the Radius 3, or a slim on-wall speaker, always pushes you to balance size, performance and practicality.

One example was our ambition for the Radius 3 to match the bass extension of the outgoing Silver 50 (7G), which uses a larger 5¼-inch driver in a bigger cabinet. To achieve this, we developed a 4½-inch bass driver with significantly improved linear excursion and control. At the same time, we had to tune the port lower than would normally be possible in such a compact enclosure.

It required a lot of iteration and refinement, but the end result is something we’re really proud of—a small speaker that delivers genuinely impressive performance.

Can you explain the driver technologies featured in this range and how they enhance overall performance?

The development of Radius 4G happened alongside the 8th Generation Silver Series, so the two share a number of core technologies. This includes our latest Rigid Diaphragm Technology (RST III) and the newest version of our 25mm C-CAM gold dome tweeter.

These technologies all support our Transparent Design Philosophy. It’s about removing barriers between the listener and the music—delivering a sound that feels natural, detailed and engaging.

We dedicate a huge amount of time to ensuring that every component works in harmony, particularly the integration between the drivers. That balance is key to creating a coherent, immersive listening experience.

What kind of sonic experience can listeners expect from the new Radius Series?

Radius 4G is a refined, high-performance range that clearly steps up from the previous generation. The naming of the models reflects that evolution and helps signal the level of improvement.

Listeners can expect a compact speaker that still delivers impressive bass extension, clarity and detail. It’s ideal for those who want high-quality sound without compromising on space or interior design. The updated styling also makes it more versatile and accessible for modern, design-led environments.

How do you see the future of entry-level loudspeaker design evolving, and in what ways does the Radius 4G reflect that direction?

Radius has always been a gateway into the Monitor Audio brand—appealing to customers through its combination of elegant design and strong performance. That’s something we’ve retained and strengthened with the fourth generation.

Looking ahead, entry-level loudspeaker design will continue to focus on blending performance with lifestyle, products that not only sound exceptional, but also integrate seamlessly into people’s homes. Radius 4G is very much a reflection of that direction.
