Monitor Audio’s diminutive MASS Home Cinema Speaker System is honoured with a ‘Red Dot’ International Design Award.

Having received international acclaim for its excellent sound, Monitor Audio’s distinctive MASS home cinema speaker system has been recognised as a supreme example of lifestyle design as well, by wowing the 37-member “red dot” jury – an august panel of international experts from the world of product design.

The compact, visually arresting MASS system, which comprises five identical satellite speakers and an active subwoofer, will be honoured with the “red dot award: product design 2013” award at a gala ceremony held at Essen’s Aalto Theatre on 1 July 2013.  It will then be put on display during a four-week special exhibition in the red dot design museum.

One of a total of 4,662 entries across 19 categories, our MASS sat/sub ensemble impressed the red dot judges by striking a truly excellent balance between product design, efficiency and practicality in order to make the introduction of high quality home cinema sound into any living space a simpler and more satisfying experience.

The compact MASS 10 satellite has a stylish construction of rigid polymer, enveloped in a black cloth finish and crowned at either end with contrasting solid aluminium end caps. Its eye-catching curved design is ribbed internally and enhanced by variable wall thickness to produce the most inert enclosure for the twin C-CAM drivers: a newly developed 1” tweeter and 4” bass/midrange.

The satellite can be wall mounted using a single-point fixing located on the rear panel, which dovetails with an optional universal wall bracket for an easy, secure and reliable solution. When wall mounting is not ideal, a dedicated MASS floor-stand with integrated cable management offers a stylish alternative. The stand is pre-wired and locates with the MASS 10’s high quality speaker terminals via a pair of connecting rods, leaving floor level terminals to accept the cables from the AV amplifier.

Underpinning the mid-high frequency refinement of the MASS satellite is a bass engine of equal calibre. The W200 active subwoofer is primed with the precision-crafted ordinance of twin 10” bass drivers and a potent 220W Class D amplifier, but, with some digital magic from Monitor Audio’s engineers, is so much more than the sum of its parts.

Commenting, Monitor Audio’s Sales and Marketing Director Alex Brady said “We’re delighted to have the MASS system recognised by the professional design community. This is a very coveted award and will be cherished by Monitor Audio, because we care about product design as much as sound quality.”

Prof. Dr. Peter Zec, initiator and CEO of the red dot said “The winners of the ‘red dot award: product design 2013’ are the protagonists of a highly developed design culture and design industry. These days it is becoming more and more difficult to distinguish between well-designed products. It is often only in the details that the special qualities become apparent. However, those product creations that pass the test before the critical eyes of the international red dot jury will not disappear into the crowd and will be able to fend off global competition.”

The Red Dot Design Award

With the red dot design award, the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen created one of the most internationally acclaimed competitions. The prize, the “red dot”, has established itself worldwide as one of the most sought-after quality marks for excellent design. The Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen displays the award-winning products in the red dot design museum for at least one year. In order to appraise the diversity in the field of design in a professional manner, the red dot design award breaks down into different disciplines: the “red dot award: product design”, “red dot award: communication design” and “red dot award: design concept”.
