The film industry showed encouraging signs of recovery in 2023, moving on from the tough pandemic era, with Barbie and The Super Mario Bros. Movie becoming the 14th and 16th highest grossing films of all time, thanks to their incredible marketing campaigns.

Despite these Hollywood blockbusters taking us by surprise, it could be a very slow start to 2024, with the first strike by Hollywood writers and actors in 60 years, which has seen work halt on many major productions push the likes of Amazon, Netflix, Disney to heavily cut back on investment.

Although its unlikely we'll experience the peaks that we have in previous years, the audience's appetite is still as high as ever. As soon as everything has been resolved and production is back on track, they'll be heading down to the cinema, and streaming in no time. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

Dir: George Miller | Warner Bros. Pictures

The Mad Max prequel from returning director George Miller sees a younger Furiosa, played by Anya Taylor-Joy, snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and into the hands of a Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus, played by Chris Hemsworth. After winning 6 Academy Awards for Fury Road, fans are excited to see whats in store, across the brutal Wasteland, for another action-packed adventure.

 

Inside Out 2

Dir: Kelsey Mann | Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

After a few years of orignal releases, Pixar suprised us by announcing a sequel to the 2015 smash hit. The second installment will be Pixar's 28th animated feature, and explores deeper within Riley's mind, in her teenage years, as new emotions start to appear around her new daily life. Directed by Kelsey Mann in his directorial debut, Amy Poehler reprises her role, with the sequel expanding on their emotional universe.

 

Joker: Folie à Deux

Dir: Todd Phillips | Warner Bros.

Joaquin Phoenix reprises his role as Joker, as the nihilistic criminal conspires with Harley Quinn, played by Lady Gaga. The story will centre on Arthur Fleck and Dr. Harleen Quinzel's deadly romantic relationship, following the riots that ensued across Gotham City. Fans are exicited to see what Todd Phillips, who has written, produced and directed the sequel, has planned.

 

 

A Quiet Place: Day One

Dir: Michael Sarnoski | Paramount Pictures

Director Michael Sarnoski takes the reigns for the third overall installment of the A Quiet Place film series. Starring Lupita Nyong'o and Alex Wolff, with Djimon Hounsou returning as the Man on the Island, from the last installment. With the plot under wraps for this spin-off prequel, its likely to focus on the origination of the sightless aliens that wreak havoc across the planet, killing off the world's population.

 

 

The Fall Guy

Dir: David Leitch | Universal Pictures

Directed by David Leitch, The Fall Guy is an adaptation of the 80s TV series. It follows Colt Seavers, played by Ryan Gosling, as an ageing stuntman drafted back to work on a film set with the the A-list star for whom he doubled long ago. Emily Blunt stars as Jody Moreno, Colt's ex and director of the studio, who goes missing, leading Colt to become a reluctant investigator to save his ex-girlfriend's film.

 

Deadpool 3

Dir: Shawn Levy | Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

For Deadpool's first appearance in the MCU, Ryan Reynolds and director Shawn Levy are going big, with the announcement of Hugh Jackman reprising his role as X-Men mutant Wolverine. Together they team up to defeat a common enemy. With Jennifer Garner also reprising her famous role as Elektra and appearances from other high profile MCU characters likey, it could be 2024's wildest film.

 

Mickey 17

Dir: Bong Joon-ho | Warner Bros.

Mickey 17 is a science fiction film written, directed, and co-produced by Bong Joon-ho, and is an adaption of Ashton Edward's novel 'Mickey7'. With Robert Pattinson, Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo and Steven Yeun in this star-studded cast, it follows the story of Mickey 17, an "expendable", who is a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim.

 

IF

Dir: John Krasinski | Paramount Pictures

IF, short for Imaginary Friends, from director John Krasinski, follows a girl who discovers an ability to see people's imaginary friends who have been abandoned by the kids they helped. Krasinski stars and brings with him some huge ensemble cast, such as Hollywood heavyweights Ryan Reynolds, Steve Carell, Sam Rockwell, among many more for this Amblin-style fantasy comedy that is sure to be a huge hit.

 

Dune: Part Two

Dir: Denis Villeneuve | Warner Bros. Pictures

Opening exclusively in theaters, director Denis Villeneuve returns for the hotly anticipated sequel, which continues the journey in Arrakis. As Paul seeks revenge for the murder of his family, only he can predict the future of the universe and the fate of those around him. Due for release in November, Chalamet is once again joined by Zendaya and a star-studded cast for the conclusion of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel.

 

Gladiator 2

Dir: Ridley Scott | Universal Pictures

24 years after the original blockbuster, director Ridley Scott returns to helm the sequel to the historical drama, which follows the nephew of Commodus. Idolising Maximus for his victories in the arena, the story picks up with Lucius, played by Paul Mescal, now a grown man. With high profile names attached, such as Denzel Washington, and a returning Djimon Hounsou, its sure to be an action-packed spectacle.
